KRABI TOWN SHOPPING
WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY IN KRABI TOWN
Once upon a time, just about the only things for sale in Krabi Town that were any interest to visitors were fishermen’s pants and sarongs. Those days are long gone, what with the advent of three major satellite shopping malls housing hundreds of brand-name outlets as well as Krabi’s (thankfully) slow waking up to tourist needs and wants. Krabi centre itself has retained its charms and still displays its archetypal provincial Thai town personality with roads teeming with shops displaying such diverse items as lawn mowers to underwear to children’s toys to motorbike parts – all under one roof.

Antiques
On the corner of Chaofa and Maharaja Soi 6 stands an interesting shop that is chock-full of Buddha images of every size, delicate porcelain ornaments, intricately decorated wooden masks, wooden elephants and painted fans. It’s all rather fascinating, if only just to have a look. This is bargaining territory so do not hesitate to use your bartering and haggling skills.

Krabi Markets
Krabi has both a day and a night market. They’re both great for discovering bizarrely shaped fruit and vegetables, buying delicious and cheap Muslim-influenced takeaways and snacks, people watching and of course shopping. Seeing as the surrounding shops handle the hard goods, the sole purpose of these markets is to supply fresh food produce.

Maharat Sois
Running off Maharat road are a number of sois (streets) all called Maharat. These feature textile shops, tailors, haberdasheries, chemists and an almost crazy mix of household and farming goods that the locals don’t seem to have any trouble whatsoever in accepting as normal.
Vogue Shopping Centre
Vogue follows the well-trodden Thai path of cramming plenty of brand-name shops under one roof with a central supermarket, food court and fast food places. The ground floor is a hive of activity and features Boots the Chemist, cosmetic counters, Body Glove products along with Bata, a KFC, Swenson’s, Pizza Company and a gold counter. Not being a particularly large building, it’s all pretty cramped with every square centimeter used and decidedly unlike the spacious outer town shopping malls. The two upper floors sell Levi’s, Wranglers and Lee jeans as well as underwear, rolling luggage and sports equipment.

On the Airport Road - Big C
Big C is a ubiquitous green-and-red shopping mall found throughout Thailand. The kernel of this warehouse-sized building is the actual Big C supermarket that sells such exotica as washing machines, electronic goods, fresh and preserved food, cheap clothing, basic children’s toys and such. Big C’s satellite shops are much more interesting. Try Supersports for marked-down brand name goods, Bata, Boots, KT Optic, Top Charoen Optical, Big Camera – all these stores sell exactly the same goods as in the West – only at marked down prices. For local products you should check out the several souvenir stands, Roberto Boutique, Oriental Princess Cosmetics and the OTOP handicraft outlets. Upstairs is a gold shop with set prices. Hungry shoppers can eat at the MK Restaurant, the mall’s food court or fill up at Mister Donut while kids can let loose in the nearby play area. Big C has acres of parking, a bank with an ATM as well as clean public conveniences.

Outlet Village
New to Thailand, Outlet Village sells fashion and sportswear along with sports accessories. This is a positive goldmine for those who won’t be seen in public without name tags and agape alligators on their shirts, shoes and pants. Some of the name brands featured here are Adidas, Le Coq Sportif, The North Face and all the other usual suspects. Outlet Village also retails golfing accessories, swimming gear (even inflatable pools) and has a small snack bar outside in the large car park. These are the genuine items for sale at factory prices – not especially cheap for Thailand but a bargain for visitors – with the added bonus that if you spend more than 5,000 baht you can claim VAT back at the airport when you leave. But make sure that you fill out the form correctly (best ask for help at the outlet) and present the goods with receipts at the airport. You win both ways!

Tesco Lotus
Tesco Lotus is playing the same game as Big C but in a slightly higher quality bracket. Again, the heart of the shopping mall is its supermarket which sells the same genre of goods as Big C and again many satellite shops fill the rest of the large, two-storey building. Tesco features several cosmetic boutiques as well as a hairdresser’s, two banks and ATMs, Triumph underwear outlet, camera and computer shops, a gold shop, Levi’s shop, a large sports outlet and many more small boutiques. Those looking to snack or have a meal can avail themselves of the food court, Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC, Black Canyon and the nationwide franchise MK. For those looking for entertainment Tesco features a game centre, a karaoke room and a Thai/English Cineplex. Again, expect good parking facilities and public conveniences.

AO NANG SHOPPING
WHAT TO BUY AND WHERE TO SHOP IN AO NANG
Shopping in Ao Nang is not as intense or diverse as in Bangkok or Phuket. But then again everything in Ao Nang is more laidback and less in-your-face (except for some pesky tailors of course) than the norm for Thai beach holiday destinations. There are countless stores selling copied T-shirts, flip-flops, beach hats and fake brand-name goods such as diving Rolexes that you shouldn’t wear in the shower and Levi’s with a short life expectancy. Depending on your home country you should be wary of buying fake brand-name bags and fashion accessories as customs are cracking down on illegal copies. Except for fixed-price shops such as opticians, supermarkets and name-brand shops haggling is part of the whole shopping deal here and shop owners will size you up and try to figure out how much you can afford. You’ll see that starting prices drop drastically once you show that you know how much an item is worth.

Further down the road from Ananya you can stock up on beachwear, beach toys, snorkeling equipment and all things marine. Here haggling is needed as the opening prices are somewhat elevated. As always smooth the transaction with a pleasant manner and a smile.

Chock Dee Handmade
Chock Dee (meaning ‘Good Luck’) sells beautiful jewelry, precious stones, old beads, boxes, necklaces, bracelets, rings and even fossils. There are two branches along the Beach Road, both attractive and impeccably presented. Silver and gold jewelry is made to order and while prices are higher than other nearby outlets the quality is tip-top and it certainly doesn’t hurt to haggle them down a little.

King’s Fashion
As with opticians, there are many tailor shops in Ao Nang. King’s Fashion is one of the longer-established ones and one which does not have the annoying habit of posting touts outside. The shop offers free transportation to customers and a 24-hour service, although it is wiser to take things slower with several fittings to make sure the cut is just right. Major credit cards accepted.

Pharmacies
There are, at the very least, five pharmacies in Ao Nang. Most pharmacists are English speaking and have extensive knowledge of what they stock. Over-the-counter drugs are far more available in Thailand than in the west and the typical Thai approach to most maladies is to swallow a bunch of antibiotics. If you are fairly up to date with what ails you go ahead and purchase but when in doubt consult the pharmacist, or better yet visit a doctor.
Phranang Leather
Mostly featuring bags, wallets and accessories – Phranang Leather is not the sort of place that rustles up a sturdy pair of cowboy boots in a few days. Nevertheless it does excel in well-crafted goods and is worth a browse through its high-quality offerings.

Thailandia Night Plaza
Thailandia Night Plaza is actually open during the day as well. It’s an ambitious business undertaking, aiming to raise the standards of the somewhat one-dimensional shopping opportunities in Ao Nang. With fashion and accessory boutiques, a food court with wall-mounted TVs and even a ‘Fish Pedicure Spa’ (fast becoming a worldwide craze) this represents a more relaxed shopping experience.

KLONG MUANG SHOPPING
WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY IN KLONG MUANG BEACHKlong Muang is quiet. Its beach and sunset views are its main attractions and for good shopping opportunities visitors should head for nearby Ao Nang.
Indeed, apart from several mom & pop stores and isolated 7-Elevens the only good shopping facilities in Klong Muang are in and around the Klong Muang Plaza (spelled ‘Klong Moung Plaza’ on the sign).

Klong Muang Plaza
This square of antique and handicraft shops, massage and beauty parlours, cafes and boutiques is the antithesis of Bangkok shopping in that it’s clean, quiet and relaxed. Shoppers can take their time, snack or even go for a massage before checking their emails – everything’s here, all centralised and handy.

RAILAY BEACH SHOPPING
WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY IN RAILAY BEACH
Railay certainly isn’t going to win major prizes for the best shopping destination in Krabi but it has welcomed a few new shopping venues in the last years. Carefree and car free, Railay is as peaceful a destination as you’re ever going to get.
Railay East and Railay West are very different from each other; Railay West is upmarket, striking looking and downright expensive if thinking in Thai baht terms while Railay East, with its mud flats, mangroves, fishing boats and hippy-like atmosphere is decidedly down at heel but a lot cheaper. Think around 300 baht a cocktail in certain hotels in Railay West and 70 baht a large bottle of Chang Beer in Railay East.

Railay East
If you’re in the market for hippy paraphernalia, secondhand books and the like then Railay East is for you. Interspersed between the pancake vendors, restaurants and bars you will find several small vendors selling beads, flip-flops, wooden souvenirs, Frisbees, beach bags and beach tennis gear.
Near the Sunrise Tropical Resort is the area’s only pharmacy (open from 09:30 – 23:00) and in between the beaches in Railay Bay Resort stands an ATM machine and a minimart selling just about everything you could possibly need for your stay at seriously hiked-up prices. This is because the resort owns the shop.

Railay West
While the shopping is markedly better in Railay West it’s still not a destination for those specifically looking for bargains in souvenirs or fashion. Next to theSand Sea Resort stands an attractive newly constructed plaza. This plaza offers good-looking beach dresses, T-shirts, sarongs and even has a tailor!
Here you can also find one of the most useful items you will need after dark in Railay – a battery powered torch. Also featured is a handmade silver merchant. Inside the Sand Sea Resort itself is a well-stocked minimart.

Krabi Wet Markets
All throughout Krabi Province you will see a colourful collection of roadside market stores with many motorcycles parked to the side, vendors selling out of the back of their pickups, colourful vegetables and piles of bizarre-looking fruit. These markets are not there just for commercial reasons, they are a part of Thai social integration and are fun to explore.
PHI PHI SHOPPING
WHAT TO BUY & WHERE TO SHOP IN PHI PHI ISLANDS
A few years ago it seemed that all you could buy on Phi Phi was food, beer and hippy jewelry but in the recent past shopping opportunities have blossomed and grown on the island. Clothes stores often double as impromptu minimarts while minimarts sell clothes and at the same time book stores masquerade as bars and coffee shops while coffee shops are the place to find good books. It's all a tad confusing for those accustomed to more organised city life but residents and visitors alike adapt and enjoy themselves in the hotch-potch that is shopping on Phi Phi. There is even a blown glass outlet and a leather goods merchant. oh, and should you feel the need, you can get a tattoo here, too.

Shopping Alleyway
Roughly halfway between the Chukit Resort and the end of Tonsai East there is a sharp left turn that makes an alley lined with stalls selling homemade beads, T-shirts, sarongs, shorts and lots of holiday knick-knacks, some of which are pretty but useless and some of which are useless but pretty. Still, if you’ve forgotten your Frisbee or beach ball or if you’re in the market for a hand-woven bracelet or a pair of fake Ray Bans or Oakley’s check this slew of stalls out.

TONSAI VILLAGE SHOPPING
WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY IN TONSAI VILLAGE - PHI PHI ISLANDTonsai Village is the place to buy jewelry, sarongs, T-shirts, funny hats, flip flops, beach gear, kids’ toys and everything to make your holiday complete.
7-Eleven
Let’s face it – everything on Phi Phi island except the coconuts was brought from either the mainland or Phuket by boat. Transporting goods costs money and so expect elevated prices, even at the 7-Eleven. However 7-Eleven still remains the cheapest of convenience stores on the island – many of which belong to the resort or hotel directly next to or behind them.
